Celebrate Earth Day in Livingston County’s Parks

April 15, 2019

Monday, April 22 is Earth Day! To celebrate, we asked visitors of Brighton-Howell Area parks to share their favorite photos and memories, as well as what the parks and outdoor recreation areas mean to them!

“Livingston County offers countless state parks with beautiful, expansive natural scenery. For Earth Day experience them, as I like to breathe in the fresh air, going for a hike and walk on the Brighton Recreation Area trails along Bishop Lake.”

“Earth day to me is so important to me. My parents were married on April 22nd. It’s about celebrating the Earth and all of the natural beauty around you along with celebrating my parents being united on this day.”

“This Earth is so beautiful and Earth Day is a day we all need to recognize and appreciate, to be able to go out into the wilderness and explore. Everything within this Earth has a purpose.”

“Heading West from Detroit on I-96, you can always count on a wonderful and relaxing view of Kensington Metropark and Kent Lake. It’s especially beautiful at sunset and a welcome contrast after the urban scene.”

“Our State Parks offer many activities. It was an exciting day at Island Lake when my son participated in one of their mini-triathlons. Without our public parks, we would be lost for recreational spaces to participate in the activities we love. On Earth Day or any day, I am grateful to have them.”

“My favorite park is Island Lake Recreation Area! While I suppose I’m slightly biased since I am the supervisor of the park, I can genuinely say I’ve had some great memories there, both on and off the job. In 2017, we installed a community-built playground. I love being able to bring my little girl there to play, knowing that I was one of the hands that helped dig the holes, put together the structures, and install the equipment. She loves it, so it’s really a full-circle experience for me. The park is always looking for volunteers since they’re how these amazing projects get done! The next volunteer workday is April 20th for Earth Day when we’ll be picking up roadside trash and doing trail work.”

“One of my favorite places to visit is Kensington Metropark, which is home to several families of wood ducks. These ducks are some of the most stunningly beautiful animals around. In early April I saw them flying from tree to tree, checking out potential nesting spaces in tree cavities. Last year I was treated to see wood ducklings padding around Wildwing Pond, enjoying the day and stretching out their tiny wings. It’s always special to see these birds at this park. It’s one of the many reasons that Kensington Metropark is a wonderful place to visit!”
